This summer I’m working for Bioceptive at the New Orleans BioInnovations Center. Bioceptive is a biomedical engineering startup focused on women’s health. Right now I am one of five employees so I will actually be able to have a meaningful impact on this company, which is really exciting. Bioceptive started out as a senior design project at Tulane that was focused on creating an improved IUD insertion device. That device has since undergone hundreds of design iterations and is now what I would consider to be a really cool and innovative way to allow women more access to effective contraception. The company is currently in the process of taking their device to market in the US and is also working on getting a CE mark (Europe’s equivalent of FDA approval) for it. Because of this, my first project here is to write a clinical evaluation for the device, which is just one of the steps in getting approval. So far its been a lot of researching different IUDs and IUD inserters, as well as researching how to get device approval in Europe, but it has been very interesting, and I have definitely learned a lot already. All in all I have really enjoyed my first week at Bioceptive and am really looking forward to what the rest of the summer brings. Check out Bioceptive’s website at http://www.bioceptive.com.
