Hi! My name is Victoria Rose and I am from New Jersey. I am a rising Junior at Tulane University, majoring in Public Health and Mathematics along with a minor in Engineering. This summer, I have been given the pleasure of interning with Planned Parenthood in Washington, DC.
Planned Parenthood and NCI have very similar missions:
- The empowerment of women.
- Effective planning for the future.
- Change for the betterment of society while ensuring that minorities and underprivileged individuals do not fall through the cracks.
The Newcomb College Institute fights to “empower women by integrating teaching, research, and community engagement at Tulane University.” Planned Parenthood fights to “educate and empower communities and to lead the reproductive rights movement.”
I fight to improve not only myself, but my community and the world around me by learning from these teachings, engaging in different communities, and helping to empower others to desire knowledge and change.
I want to learn all that I can take in from experienced individuals who have been exposed to these issues first-hand. This will not only allow me to better myself through knowledge and hands-on experience but also will add to my professional resume, making me a more qualified candidate further down my career path. I wish to gain the experience to work with nonprofit organizations and then travel to help implement these teachings and resources to other communities.
My five learning objectives for this summer are as follows:
- Professional Growth
- Cognitive Development
- Leadership Building
- Maturation Process
- Application of Skills
My goal this summer is not only to assist in the education of others but also to educate myself. I aim to surround and immerse myself in the glaring issues of today’s society and to further comprehend and understand the statistics and numbers behind the facts. This internship will be able to give me a tangible experience of learning by doing. Through this, I will be able to grow in a professional setting and gain knowledge of how my classroom skills can transfer into the workforce.
I focus on improving not only myself but my community and the world around me. Through this internship, I will be learning from Planned Parenthood teachings, engaging in different communities, and helping to empower those around me to have a similar desire for knowledge and change. This internship will give me the opportunity to develop in ways beyond what a classroom experience can give me and I am greatly looking forward to it.
I believe this opportunity will strengthen and expand upon the traits I already pride myself on in the form of leadership skills. Planned Parenthood believes in “leadership based upon collaboration vs hierarchy.” This will be a very rewarding partnership because everyone’s voice matters and I will be able to lend a hand in that.
Having a full-time, “real person” job will certainly help me to mature exponentially. There will be expectations and responsibilities to which I will be held. I am confident in my ability to live up to the organization’s standards. Additionally, I will be living on my own in a new city (Washington, DC). I have been fortunate to travel extensively with my family and always welcome new challenges, so I am excited to add this one to my list. This will be a great chance for me to see how I like working away from home, friends, and family as I see what the workforce is like on my own.
The Planned Parenthood internship will give me the opportunity to combine my knowledge of computer coding and statistical analysis with the implementation of public policy in order to assist Planned Parenthood with their daily logistical tasks. While simultaneously enhancing my public speaking and outreach skills by going out to the community for educational purposes.
I am greatly looking forward to beginning my internship and documenting my experiences through this blog!
