Hi everyone! My name is Kameron and I’m a junior studying Biomedical Engineering. This spring I’ll be continuing my work with the New Orleans Abortion Fund. I’ve met so many wonderful people at NOAF and I can’t wait to jump back in.
NOAF is a nonprofit focused on affirming a woman’s right to choose and ensuring that all people have adequate access to the medical care they need. Most of this comes in the form of providing financial assistance to women seeking abortions in Louisiana. However, NOAF is not limited to just this; they run fundraising events, sell customized items online, hold seminars, and run a clinic escort program, just to name a few.
But recently, NOAF has been toying with the idea of canvassing. This is where I came in. Last semester I organized a community canvassing campaign targeted to get people out to vote (hence the name “Get Out The Vote Canvassing”) in the primary election. With the help of my supervisor Amy, I researched Louisiana healthcare injustice facts, created informational postcards, wrote a canvassing rap, and trained and led canvassers in our efforts to get New Orleanians out to the polls.
Our results were overwhelmingly positive, many people thanked us for being out in the streets and reenergizing our want to fulfill our civic duty. We handed out over 300 postcards and even signed some people up for our mailing list!
This semester my project will be twofold: I’ll be focusing on creating fact sheets about abortion, equal pay, and other injustices in Louisiana, and gearing up for another round of canvassing after the legislative session starts in April. I can’t wait to see what this semester brings!
