“Meeting new role models through Ms.”
by Meredith Abdelnour
As I’ve grown as a journalist over time, one aspect of the field I feel I’ve really grown in is interviews. I used to get anxious at the very thought of interviewing someone, but now I’m excited when I have the opportunity to conduct an interview. It’s such a great way to get to talk to interesting people about the work they’re passionate about, and I always appreciate getting to meet such great people who are doing such important work in the community.
During my time at Ms. magazine, I’ve been able to talk to so many different people and feminists from different experiences. I had the chance to interview activist Allie Young, who is working to advocate for voting rights and pandemic safety in Indigenous communities. My fellow intern Khira and I spoke with the incredible people at Every Voices Coalition for the second time recently to follow up on their recent campaign #EDActNow. I’ve spoken with student activist Nimisha Srikanth about her work distributing contraceptives on campus and Erin Grant at the Abortion Care Network about the importance of independent clinics.
As a college student who isn’t exactly sure what my plans are after graduation, I love getting to learn more about the people I interview, their career paths, and how they promote feminist values both in their work and everyday lives. I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to work in a field like feminist journalism that I’m so passionate about, and I’m looking forward to continuing to grow and learn in my internship with Ms. magazine.
