Impacting the Community Through Women With A Vision

“Impacting the Community Through Women With A Vision”

Working at Women With A Vision has been a blessing in disguise for me, it’s my safe space as a black woman navigating an ultra-white world. My supervisor is extremely educated and I feel as though she understands many of my situations. For example, I recently have been experiencing microaggressions in class and I was frustrated because I wasn’t sure how to remain respectful in the face of disrespect. So I called my supervisor and just broke down crying because I felt like it was the only place where my experiences were understood and not invalidated.

I am also in the process of working on a presentation to present to the employees of Women With A Vision to show why I would be a useful asset in building what the Young Women With A Vision program could look like. I envision a program that includes the literary analysis of texts by authors like bell hooks, Assata Shakur, and Toni Morrison. Some things I would like to teach young girls include how to nail a presentation, how to deliver a powerful speech, and how to think critically.

I do work primarily on the reproductive justice team but I try to visit other task forces and ask if they would like some help with anything. Some days I am redrafting a form or organizing resource bags, it varies. Currently, I am working on a TikTok series to raise awareness on countless different topics like general sex education, and promoting people to visit the office for free STI testing and consent.

Because of Women With A Vision, I recognized my passion for completing fieldwork because I assisted my supervisor with an outreach event at a library. I enjoyed it because I hope that someday I will be able to actually do fieldwork on my own, provide resources and accumulate data to build our numbers.
