“My semester with Sista Midwife Productions”
by Naomi Lacey
Hello there! I’m so proud to say that I completed my first semester as a reproductive health intern. This past semester I have had the privilege of working as an intern for Nicole Deggins and Sista Midwife Productions.
This semester I worked to gather information to create presentations on several topics including birth in prisons and the transition from traditional midwifery to an emphasis on hospital birthing. I am currently working on a spreadsheet that compares the numerous paths to becoming a practicing midwife in the United States. I have become quite proficient in Canva and have created a number of infographics that serve to educate the public on topics in women’s health.
At its face Sista Midwife Productions is a community-based organization that educates birth workers and advocates for birth justice for black moms. I quickly learned that it is much more than that. The women at Sista Midwives have fostered a community that connects, loves, and supports black women and equips them with the necessary tools to advocate for themselves during their pregnancy journey. I have come out of this semester with a changed perspective of pregnancy and childbirth.
