Back to the Capital

Hello there! My name is Emma Boelter and I am a rising senior at Tulane majoring in Political Science and English. While I have a wide array of interests, recently I have been most interested in learning more about communications, journalism, and digital media. Luckily, I was able to land an internship with HandsOn Network/ Points of Light in Washington, D.C. as a communications intern.

I’m so excited to return to D.C. this summer. Last year I lived and worked in the D.C. area with Child Care Aware of America, as a public policy intern. Through this position I learned a lot about the importance of advocacy and the intricacies of promoting policy, and felt certain that I wanted to return to D.C. in the future. I feel incredibly fortunate to have found position with HandsOn, an organization focused on “inspiring” and “mobilizing” volunteers around the country. Many of the nonprofits that HandsOn Network connects volunteers with involve women’s advocacy, health, and education.

From what I have gathered through speaking with my supervisor, my position with HandsOn Network will be dynamic and provide me with a significant amount of autonomy – some days I may have projects that involve updating a website or blog, other days I might be working on creating a video, and some days I might be completing more analytical tasks. This variation suits my preferred working style and hopefully will provide me with many new capabilities.

Although my internship does not begin until early June, I am already counting down the days until I get to return to our nation’s Capital. I’m eager to expand and solidify my network, immerse myself in the city (which should be particularly exciting given the current political climate), and most of all grow from my internship experience.

Thank you to NCI for assisting me as I embark on this incredible summer opportunity!
