My name is Ellie Pepperell and I am a junior studying Biomedical Engineering at Tulane University. This summer, I will be performing research in Dr. Kristin Miller’s Biomechanics of Growth and Remodeling Laboratory at Tulane University. My studies will focus on the analysis of collagen alignment and undulation in tendon and reproductive tissues. My desire to perform this research stems from a passion for women’s health issues which, like the issues I will be researching, are historically understudied. Pre-term birth is a global killer that often leaves survivors disadvantaged for life and yet, according to the World Health Organization, every year an estimated 15 million babies are born preterm. These are the kinds of statistics that research in the realm of that I will be conducting is trying to lower. It is a serious goal of mine to use my education in science and engineering to better the lives of women by addressing the major health issues faced by the world’s female population and this research experience is a huge first step in achieving my goals. I was particularly drawn to Dr. Miller’s lab because it is a female dominated lab that would give me a uniquely empowering experience as a woman in STEM. Of the seven undergraduates working in the lab, six of us are women. Additionally, having a female principle investigator in the lab creates a hugely inspiring environment to be in. Although women are so underrepresented in the field of science and engineering, while conducting research in this lab I will not feel this way. This research experience will truly empower me to pursue a career in and strive to become a leader in the field of STEM despite the overarching pressures of the male dominated field. I know that this woman centered experience will give me the knowledge and skills to turn NCI’s mission statement of life long leadership and empowerment into action.
During my internship I hope to achieve 5 learning objectives in order to better myself both academically and professionally. These objectives include bettering my communication, collaboration, technical, scientific writing, and laboratory protocol skills. With these goals in mind, my summer research experience will give me the skills I need to be successful in a future career in Biomedical Engineering. In order to ensure these goals will be met and I will be getting the most out of my internship, I will be working closely with my principal investigator to further flesh out my goals and make sure that they are attainable. With her help, I know that this summer experience will give me a fantastic opportunity to better myself as a professional woman in the 21st century.
